Art Competition

In 2005 we ran The Four Seasons Art Competition amongst Artists from several Societies in and around Bromley. We wanted them to capture the College and its grounds through the various seasons of the year and through their pictures to help us to make the public more aware of Bromley & Sheppard’s Colleges’ existence.

Seventeen Artists and Photographers from Bromley, Chislehurst, Orpington, Petts Wood and West Wickham entered a total of 68 artworks, all of which were displayed in the Wren Quad at the College and at Rochester Cathedral in April 2006.

Stan Codling, Creative director of Retail & Detail Advertising and Rosie Eglin of Bexley Education Department were the judges, who awarded two First Prizes.  One for Best group of four paintings and the other for the best group of four photographs.  Their prizes were weekends for two at an Old English Inn, generously donated by Greene King and two M&S vouchers for £20 for the best single painting and the best single photograph.

The First Church Commissioner, Andreas Whittam Smith, whose mother was a Collegian at Bromley & Sheppard’s, kindly agreed to present the prizes and did so at the first exhibition in the Wren Quad.

Peter Dinsmore of Bromley Art Society lent us the display boards on which the pictures were hung and the Collegians supplied a valiant team of volunteers to guard the pictures, tell the visitors about the Colleges and take the money from anyone who wanted to buy - we sold fifteen pictures in all.

It was very grand to see the gallery set up at Rochester Cathedral but the finest display was at the College itself where the Wren Quad looked as if it was made for just such a display. Thanks to everyone who contributed their work or their time.
